I don't play Guild Wars, but I like the weapon sets people are drawing. What does the theming of each collection mean?

It is part of design, you pick up the theme and design weapons that are used in the game...:)

I would love to turn these into 3D models.  Do you happen to have a version of this without the particles (smoke/glitter)?

...very very few people are born great at what they choose to do...the vast majority of those who we consider great have worked their tail off, lived and breathed and sacrificed. What i`m looking at is a huge wall that asks me what i`m willing to give up for my artwork. If you love doing it and have a passion for it...and yourevery talented...then dont give up, never. Keep working and learning. One day you`ll do this for a living . :)

Thanks, but as i can see now, my days are numbered. I tried everything so far, and still getting :"Sorry, too old, not what we are looking for, no diploma..." and i will still get those.

I am 34, way below other artists and only two years of serious practice ( life would not give me a break to start painting... )

I really hope i will someday do what i love, but, so far...I am not losing hope, i am just...A bit suspicious :D

...i`m 55, am looking to get in school and get the degree...what I can tell you is that if you truely love graphics then you must never stop. Writers, and that includes the great writers started by piling up rejection letters, some over a hundred before they got something published. they told Lucille Ball that she wasnt outgoing enough to be on the stage, Abraham Lincoln failed in business, marraige and lost 7 elections before he succeeded. And i believe he was older than you at that point. What i`m saying is that life is indeed short my friend and what is important is that we spend our days doing what we love, with joy. You have a serious gift and I know that not everyone will see that, but work your passion at what you love, seek out and learn always, it is the process not the product that matters. Look at your skills and workflow, find out what some of the skills teach as cirriculum, find out the skills you may lack or need to polish. And learn and work on them, if you cant get into school then learn on your own. Create a well rounded portfolio showcasing multiple skills, show people that you can do everything people with a degree can do and do it better. Network network network, get setup on the main graphics sites and post work and make friends, people in the game and film industry like to browse good artwork too just like us.
For me, my job comes to an end in about a year at best, I have wasted way too much time on other things, so I feel like i`m facing the edge of darkness. So dont lose hope, dont stop believeing and never ever give up. Someone will look at the quality of your work and be trying to get ahold of you. until then keep amazing us and keep learning.
:)

I completely understand, i just wish i was a bit younger to start. I understand what you are saying, in this time of information i need to use it. But, it is very hard when you must concentrate on surviving, which we are still doing. So, i have only few hours a day to completely focus on research, study, etc. Making friends is not easy as it was, and i am trying my best, but...

No success, so far. Maybe i am the lousy person so it may be logical. So far, i have been stab in the back so many times i don't really believe people that easily. Living in shit-ass country like this is no easy task. For one life, two civil wars, one NATO bombardement , hyper inflation and poverty, criminal at it's highest where government is top gang...It is freaking hard to find a job as a "potential terrorist"...I know many have left, and get jobs, and they are trying to show us in a light we really are, not like media shown us. Damn, my pal was rejected by Travel TV to guide them on scuba site, because they were afraid of his Serbian nationality, because they believed all the shit that made Serbia "wrongdoer's".

And on top of that, my own mistakes, and average level of design is what is completely stalling me. I hope i will, for once, have a chance to get a normal, and i mean, ONE job, to live at least other half of my life normally...I am trying hard, and falling hard, but, still trying to get up :D Ah, and i know that great things will not happen to everybody, so, i am trying to be real as i can get...

.....yea i hear ya bro. You certainly didnt ask for the situation you find yourself in. To be honest this world sucks and most people are assholes, and it will only get worse. But.....you have a gift, and it seems that people who are in an environment of turmoil have more energy or whatever you want to call it to create. I create best when im deeply stressed, lucky me. Not gonna blow smoke up your ass and say its easy or theres all butterflies and unicorns under rainbows (lol)......yet I see a guy younger than me who loves to create and I dont want to let tghe shit of this world destroy that. maybe it wont ever go anywhere, but your life is now, and there are no promises, all we have is the present moment. Dont worry about what people think, dont worry abouit tomorrow, and dont worry about the time you dont have. We all have to make a living and eat and take care of famliy. yours is worse than most.....but what I want to get past your defenses and into your heart is that you love doing artwork, you have a talent, and if you indeed love it then for whatever time you can figure out where you lack and work to learn, learn so that you fullfill your love of creation. Process not product, on the making of friends...people come and go....the people who are not honorable and who try and stab you in the back just let em go, thats their fault not a reflection on you.
You know what you love to do, plot your course and see what the future brings. Would you let this shadow of the dark turn you from that which you love? And years from now , looking back upon your life, will you chance upon your work and wish and wonder what might have been? man is the only animal who dreams, both divine and nightmare, who fears the smoke and mirrors of what may be. Live your life so that you have no regrets. the past you cant change bro, but from this moment on......
hang on, hang in, and let your artwork be your oasis,

Glorious!(ahahaha 2 yrs later)

I started to go through game art concepts as a result of deciding what I wanted to do for my career and happened to come across your work, which, by the way, are amazing.
May I ask a few questions?

How did you come up with this idea?
Where did the inspiration come from?
How do you start on the design?
Is there any structure or "anatomy" needed(I don't know how to rephrase this)? If so, is there any tutorials you recommend?

They are kinda similar questions but slightly different, but if its not too much answer them as if they were separate? I tend to always have difficulty with anything related to designing something knew and is always stumped on what to draw. It be wonderful to have some insight! Thank you for your time and once again, wonderful art. I hope to be able to do something this amazing in the future(as of now I can't much art well xD).

Thanks! It is one year :D

Well, first, i wish you all the best in the concept art! I am not a professional, by far. I didn't have any major jobs, all work i had is pretty amateurish, and low payed jobs. So, i am not suitable to give advices, since i am still learning myself.

For weapon set, i come with day and night ( white and black, good and evil, ying and yang ) style. You can imagine whatever you want. For example, in GW2 game you can find greatsword made of corn... So, whatever muse hits you, take it, do not be afraid of experimenting.

You start on design with silhouettes, and when yu like the shape of whatever weapon you are making, you start adding details. But, because i am still learning ( that is my first weapon set that i made in my life ), i am not really that good at giving advices. all i learned i learned from free tutorials of guy called Feng Zhu, you can check his website and his free tutorials, which are perfect, if you know to "read between the lines" :D He is great techer and gives you more than drawing itself.

He is one of my inspirations, definitely, and guy who put me back on track. I saw all his free tutorials, more than once. Listen to the guy, he is very very smart, and very good teacher. [link]

I can only tell you few things that i learned the hard way:

1. Practice a lot - 8 hours a day is great, if you have time. Point is:" what are you willing to give up in your life to be better artist?"
My answer is/was :" I gave up my free time", meaning, i get off from work, sit in my chair and start drawing/practicing until i get down to sleep. I made a mistake, i didn't practice when i was a kid, and now i am paying hard for that.

2. Learn FUNDAMENTALS. Without those, you are screwed. My mistake is that i didn't know fundamentals for years, because there was no body to tell me that. Stupid little country, no internet, no interest in art whatsoever, so, i got screwed as young guy. I am now still learning fundamentals now. So, those are ( as far as i know ):

- Perspective
- Lightning and Shadow
- Color Theory
- Anatomy of humans, animals and things ( you must understand HOW IT WORKS, not how to draw it ).

3. Practice :D

Hope it helps, and best wishes! :D

No problem! Still a long time xD.

Not sound all cliche or a smarty pants but you have something not everyone has, experience. And I believe that along can help :)!

There's a corn great sword in GW2? Dang Im going to have to get that!
Alright. Something I'd have to work on than.

Thank you! Yes, I just recently learned that yesterday once I noticed many professionals did the same thing.

Now I know what classes to take or at least a general direction! Human Anatomy CP here I come. But as a curiosity, why would you need to learn how it works? It's the first time I've heard about needing to know the function.

Yes, very! And I wish you good luck on your future works!

Experience? Nah, maybe experience like: How to survive three wars, how to survive poverty, hyperinflation, and still stay sane :D

In those parts of life i have experience, since our county gives us only those. In art, not so much, i am at level of high-school boy.

And yeah, there is a Corn greatsword, and it sucks :D

As for understanding of how it works, it is fundamental to know. Same for my bow picture, right? All things that we are drawing needs to be break down to parts and understanding of those parts. Anatomy, vehicles, nature, light...I am still learning too :D

Thank you, and i wish you the same!

I do not have much time to design weaponry, since i am not working in game industry, i have a job that needs to be done first, and it is sucking most of my time. But, i will soon start on second set, i am planning to do Daynight Armor sets, for all three classes :)

Hey there,

Are you playing Guild Wars 2, too? ;)
I really like your weapon designs. My favorites are the bow and the shield. I love the concept and the effects you have added to them. The detail you have gone through is wonderful, I wish I could achieve that kind of look. I love creating all sorts of things, species, dieties, and of course weapons! If you have some time, I'd like to invite you to my to see my forge I'd be curious to hear what you think.
